Five Signs Your Consumer Unit Needs Replacing

Your consumer unit (fuse box) is the heart of your electrical installation. Watch out for these warning signs: fuses that blow repeatedly or circuit breakers that keep tripping, a unit that's more than 25 years old, visible scorch marks or a burning smell, or a unit still using rewireable fuses instead of modern circuit breakers and RCDs. If you spot any of these, don't wait for a fault to develop — get the unit inspected. What an EICR Involves — and Why Landlords Need One

An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is a full inspection and test of your property's fixed wiring — circuits, consumer unit, earthing and accessories — finished with a written report grading any issues by severity. Landlords in England are legally required to have an EICR carried out at least every five years, and to provide a copy to tenants. Homeowners aren't obliged to have one, but it's the single best way to know your wiring is safe, and it's often requested when buying or selling a property.
